Granger Congratulates Fort Worth’s Community Learning Center on $1.1 Million U.S. Department of Labor Grant to Fund YouthBuild Program

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Kay Granger (R-TX), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement today applauding the U.S. Department of Labor’s announcement of a $1.1 million grant to Fort Worth’s Community Learning Center dba CLC, Inc. This award is one of 67 grants totaling up to $85 million from the department to YouthBuild programs across the country.

“This is an important day for the YouthBuild program and the people it serves. This established and impactful program makes a true difference for vulnerable youth in Fort Worth by creating pathways to employment and education.

“I am proud to serve as a voice for YouthBuild and support this organization as it continues to grow. Today’s award of $1.1 million to the Fort Worth Community Learning Center will allow the organization’s YouthBuild program to expand its outreach and create even more opportunities for young people in Fort Worth.”

Pat Lane, President and Chair of the Community Learning Center, Inc. Board of Directors, said, “This grant will make a huge difference to youth ages 16 to 24 who have dropped out of high school by providing them with opportunities to achieve success. CLC, Inc. is thrilled to work with community-based organizations and employer partners to assist youth with backgrounds and at-risk youth develop multiple skills that will lead to careers in high demand occupations.”

YouthBuild targets low income young adults who are neither in school nor employed and provides them both work and educational opportunities. YouthBuild students learn job skills by building affordable housing in their communities, while working toward a GED or high school diploma. Emphasis is placed on leadership development, community service, and the creation of a positive mini-community of adults and youth committed to each other’s success. Students may earn AmeriCorps education awards through their homebuilding and other community service. At exit, they are placed in college, jobs, or both.
